The premier neurosurgical event of the year in the USA, the 2023 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting, took place in Los Angeles, April 21-24, 2023.
The premier neurosurgical event of the year in the USA, the 2023 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting, took place in Los Angeles, April 21-24, 2023. This year, the 91st AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, dubbed Neurosurgeons as Advocates, was held at the Los Angeles Convention Center. This prominent event featured plenary and scientific sessions, lectures and discussions, as well as opportunities to network and mingle with colleagues from around the world. The AANS Annual Scientific Meeting is the preeminent gathering of neurosurgeons in the USA, with an emphasis on the field’s latest research and technological advances. Neurosurgeons, as well as neurosurgical residents, medical students, nurses, clinical specialists, physician assistants, allied health professionals and other medical professionals, joined together and immersed themselves in the incredible developments taking place within the field of neurosurgery. More than 4,000 medical professionals and industry representatives attended the conference. More than 375 neurosurgical professionals traveled from outside the United States to attend the event in person, representing 70+ countries, including Taiwan, Brazil, Germany, India, Australia, Austria, Egypt, El Salvador.
AANS leaders welcomed international attendees during the Global Symposium on Friday, April 21. In collaboration with the Federación Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Neurocirugía and the Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons, Ann R. Stroink, MD, FAANS, Jacques Morcos, MD, FAANS and Katherine Drummond, MD, FRACS, kicked off the symposium before speakers from around the world shared insights and science. Following the scientific presentations, 2023 AANS President Dr. Stroink shared an update on the AANS global strategy.

Immediately following the Global Symposium, all attendees were invited to the 2023 Global Reception. AANS leadership and special dignitaries from around the world networked with colleagues while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The meeting featured numerous prominent figures in sports, science, entertainment and medicine. The Opening Session included an exclusive Fireside Chat with Roger Goodell, Commissioner, National Football League. Goodell was joined by a prestigious group of professionals to discuss "Concussion in Sports: What Every Neurosurgeon Should Know." The Fireside Chat featured Allen K. Sills, MD, FAANS, Chief Medical Officer, National Football League and Margot Putukian, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Major League Soccer and was moderated by Ann R. Stroink, MD, FAANS, and Dr. Sills. Following the Fireside Chat, Will Flanary (aka Dr. Glaucomflecken), ophthalmologist and comedian, provided some levity and entertained the crowd with a stand-up comedy routine. The plenary sessions featured notable speakers Saturday, April 22, and Sunday, April 23. JJ Abrams, founder and co-CEO of Bad Robot Productions and a renowned television and movie writer, director and producer, sat down with Dr. Stroink to talk about creativity and technology as it relates to film and medicine. Anima Anandkumar, director of machine learning research at NVIDA, shared some of the latest advancements in AI and machine learning. Thomas J. Oxley, MD, PhD, CEO of Synchron Inc, participated in a panel discussion on brain-computer interfaces. These and many other notable speakers contributed to a relevant and memorable event.
The 2023 theme Neurosurgeons as Advocates emphasized that all neurosurgeons are advocates; advocates for patients, the specialty, education, science, research and access to care. AANS President Ann R. Stroink, MD, FAANS, gave an inspiring presidential address as she shared some of her history and passions. She called on everyone to be an advocate and showcased the many ways neurosurgeons advocate every day.

The exemplary plenary and educational sessions featured some of the most exciting and relevant science, presented for the first time. Highlights include the late-breaking abstract Efficacy and Safety of Early Minimally Invasive Removal of Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ENRICH): a Multicenter Randomized Adaptive Trial, which was showcased Saturday, April 22. The 2023 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting was also the debut of the late-breaking abstract Decompressive Craniectomy vs Craniotomy for Traumatic Acute Subdural Hematoma and the late- breaking abstract An Intracortical Speech BCI for High-Performance Brain-to-Text Communication. Speech brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to restore rapid communication to people with paralysis by neurally decoding attempted speaking into text. “Anarthria” is a distressing condition in which a person cannot speak, despite being able to understand speech and knowing what they want to say. It is usually caused by a brain injury, such as a stroke or a neurological disorder, such as Parkinson’s disease or ALS. The AANS Annual Scientific Meeting continues to be the preeminent meeting for the most important and impactful neurosurgical science and research.
Intended to simultaneously represent a question, a statement and a challenge, 2023-2024 AANS President, Anthony L. Asher, MD, FAANS, selected What Matters as the theme for the 2024 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. Asher added, “This theme means a lot to me personally as I, like many of you, am deeply con- cerned about growing disharmony, and sometimes outright acrimony, in current society. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I might, even in a limited way as a single individual, start to positively influence the trajectory of our collective dialogue, and perhaps even our collective progress.”
