AASNS: The Last Decade

The year 2020 has been a terrible year. However, the journey leading up to 2020 has been nothing short of remarkable for neurosurgery in our continent and our continental society, the Asian Australasian Society of Neurological Surgeons (AASNS). AASNS has played a significant role in the advancement of the discipline and has initiated educational activities in earnest to improve the standard of neurosurgery in our continent.

CAANS Continental Society Report

CAANS has only been in existence since 2012. Prior to this, the African Continent’s neurosurgeons were represented by an umbrella neuroscience organization, PAANS, the Pan African Association of Neurological Sciences, which was launched in Nairobi Kenya in 1972.

FLANC Continental Society Report

The Latin American Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (FLANC) is our continental Federation. Twenty-three societies, 2 regional societies, and 3 extra continental societies are part of FLANC. There are over 10,000 neurosurgeons in Latin America but the official numbers may not accurately show the actual number of neurosurgeons as many of them have not joined any of the country societies.

AANS Continental Society Report

Following is the report from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). We were forced to cancel the April 2020 Boston AANS Annual Scientific Meeting, planned as a global celebration of neurosurgery. We thank everyone who supported the planning process, especially the international collaborating societies: the Continental African Association of Neurosurgical Societies (CAANS) and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS).

Global Neurosurgery Committee Report

The Global Neurosurgery Committee began its work in June of this year, and since then has been hard at work bringing together neurosurgeons from around the world to collectively address the unmet need for neurosurgical care. The goal is to implement our Global Action Plan, details of which can be found on the website, by the time of the next WFNS Special World Congress in Bogota, Colombia, in 2021.
